Four Hoosier families, joined by medical providers, are challenging an Indiana law passed in April 2023 barring access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Indiana is home to over 4,000 transgender adolescents and the health care targeted by this law is supported by the entire mainstream of the medical community.

Alongside his parents, A.C., a boy who was barred from using the boys’ restroom with the other boys because he is transgender, has sued his Indiana school district for violating his right under federal law to attend school.

The ACLU filed an amicus brief in Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County v. Talevski to urge the Supreme Court to uphold private individuals’ right to sue state and local actors for violations of their federal civil rights under Section 1983.

In May 2017, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Indiana, challenged a law creating unnecessary obstacles to abortion for people under 18 years of age. The lawsuit was filed against the Commissioner of the Indiana State Department of Health.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on behalf of Common Cause Indiana challenging an Indiana law that permits local election authorities to immediately purge the registrations of Indiana voters – without written confirmation from the voter, notice, or any waiting period – based on a match in the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program (“Crosscheck”). Crosscheck, a program administered by the Kansas Secretary of State, Kris Kobach, is inaccurate and unreliable, utilizing a matching protocol that, according to a study by a team of researchers at Stanford, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and Microsoft, incorrectly flags people as potential double voters more than 99 percent of the time.
