In Re: Search Warrants

What's at Stake

In June 2011, the ACLU, ACLU of Vermont and the Electronic Frontier Foundation filed a brief urging the Vermont Supreme Court to reject demands by local prosecutors to override warrant restrictions imposed by the court and allow a limitless search of a personal computer.

The groups argue that the warrant restrictions are essential to ensuring that the search meets constitutional requirements and that police in Burlington, VT should not be granted license to search the entirety of any computer or electronic device found in the home of a man suspected of committing identity theft.
