WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court granted the Trump administration’s request to allow the latest asylum ban to take effect as the case is litigated. The ban seeks to categorically deny asylum to anyone at the southern border who had transited through a third country en route to the United States, with very limited exceptions.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Southern Poverty Law Center, and Center for Constitutional Rights are challenging the policy.

ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt had this reaction to today’s Supreme Court order: “This is just a temporary step, and we’re hopeful we’ll prevail at the end of the day. The lives of thousands of families are at stake.”
