Stop-and-Frisks Hit Record in 2011 (wsj.com)
New York City police officers stopped and frisked 684,330 individuals in 2011 – the highest number of stop-and-frisks ever reported by the department, and a 14% increase over the previous record established in 2010. The data reveals stark racial disparities regarding who the NYPD is subjecting to these stops of primarily innocent persons (only 12% of stops resulted in arrests or summonses). Of the 684,330 people stopped in 2011, 87% were black or Hispanic, and only 9% were white.
