ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero released this statement:

“Peter B. Lewis was one of America’s great patriots. He was single-mindedly committed to the values of equality, fairness and justice – values that guided his stewardship of Progressive Insurance as well as his personal philanthropy. He was a proud card-carrying member of the ACLU for close to four decades and his generous support of our programs transformed America into a more perfect union. His belief in the underdog and commitment to righting wrongs made him a benefactor to millions of Americans, whom he never met but cared deeply about. We mourn the death of a man who epitomized the best of our country’s values.”
