ALBANY – The New York State Legislature today passed the Green Light Bill, legislation allowing undocumented New Yorkers the opportunity to earn a driver’s license. The New York Civil Liberties Union has made passage of the bill a priority this legislative session. The bill now moves to the Governor’s desk.
The following statement is attributable to NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman:
“With the passage of the Green Light Bill in both chambers, legislators are rallying to the defense of immigrant New Yorkers in the face of unprecedented threats from Washington. In so many parts of our state, driving is a daily necessity for school, work, medical appointments and more. Yet, for undocumented New Yorkers, the inability to seek a driver’s license means a simple traffic stop can risk the involvement of ICE and even being separated from their families. By signing the Green Light Bill, Gov. Cuomo has the opportunity to allow immigrant New Yorkers to lead fuller lives, out of the shadows.”
