EL PASO — Today the ACLU Regional Center for Border Rights (RCBR) announced the appointment of its new director Astrid Dominguez. A border native, Dominguez brings considerable civil rights and immigrants’ rights experience to the RCBR, most recently in her capacity as the immigrants’ rights policy strategist for the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas.

“I’m both honored and excited to take on this new role at the RCBR,” said Dominguez. “We have our work cut out for us. Between the increasingly divisive anti-immigrant rhetoric coming from our national lawmakers, escalated border militarization, and elevated threats to the civil liberties of border residents at the hands of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, our border communities need all the support they can get. Our staff and I look forward to fighting against this unaccountable agency in the months and years ahead.”

The Regional Center for Border Rights headquarters announced its move from Las Cruces to El Paso in March of 2017. In addition to Dominguez’s appointment, the RCBR will continue to build its staff and capacity over the coming months.

“Our border communities are under siege, and no one is more qualified to break that siege than Astrid Dominguez,” said Terri Burke, executive director of the ACLU of Texas. “Residents all along the border deserve to live in communities where their lives, rights and dignity are respected, and I look forward to seeing Astrid apply her considerable talents to that goal.”
