Postmates, OkCupid, Broadway Stars, and More Partner with ACLU During LGBT Pride Month

NEW YORK — In celebration of LGBT Pride Month, the American Civil Liberties Union has partnered with a variety of businesses and celebrities to work towards a goal of making equal opportunity the law and the norm in all 50 states.

“Day after day, LGBT people are being told by the Trump administration and other government officials that their identities are not valid,” said James Esseks, director of the ACLU LGBT & HIV Project. “But you are valid, and we are so pleased to partner with these businesses and celebrities who see you, who honor you, and who respect you. You belong in America — and we will keep fighting until our laws fully reflect that you do.”

Businesses around the country have donated to the ACLU or encouraged their customers to contact elected officials. These businesses include OkCupid, Postmates, Standard Hotels, SKYY Vodka, pincause, and Grit N Glory.

At the 2018 Tony Awards, Broadway Stars wore ACLU ribbons at the annual June event, including Patti LuPone, nominees Ethan Slater and Lauren Ridloff, and backstage host Rachel Bloom. Andrew Garfield, who won the Tony for Best Actor in a Play for “Angels in America,” referenced the ACLU’s case about LGBT nondiscrimination protections saying “Let’s bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked.”

On June 28, Musicians Ella Vos, VÉRITÉ, Icona Pop, and MIJA are releasing the ACLU Remix of “You Don’t Know About Me” with the proceeds benefiting the ACLU.

That same day, the ACLU will be honored at the 2018 VH1 Trailblazers awards.

The ACLU’s messages at Pride this year are “We the People” and “No Body is Illegal.” Attendees at pride events in cities around the country have worn the merchandise, which is available for purchase from the ACLU store. Communities that have already had Pride events, like Brooklyn and Indianapolis, have distributed thousands of ACLU items.

In Denver, ACLU clients Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins served as grand marshals. ACLU of Kentucky Executive Director Michael Aldridge served as grand marshal in Louisville’s Kentuciana Pride.

Additional merchandise will be distributed at the 2018 NYC Pride March on Sunday, June 24 and in communities around the country as they hold their 2018 Pride celebrations.
