Police Surveillance May Earn Money for City (nytimes.com)

State and local law enforcement are interested purchasing the capabilities of the NYPD and Microsoft’s “ring of steel” surveillance program called the Domain Awareness System. Law enforcement agencies would spend at least $7 million to use the software that will allow them to centrally download and search information collected from surveillance equipment that would be installed around the city, like cameras, license plate readers, and radiation detectors. New York City will be able to implement any new system capability developed for another municipality, and will receive 30% of the sales revenues, which will be used for its counterterrorism and crime prevent programs.
