Undercover officers for the NYPD engaged in unconstitutional surveillance of the lawful activities of liberal political activist groups, infringing on the members’ First Amendment rights. The surveillance tactics are similar to those used by the NYPD in 2004 leading up to the Republican National Convention. However, the surveillance was still ongoing in 2008, years after the convention ended, and even involved NYPD officers traveling to a New Orleans political summit to spy on the activities of liberal activists and journalists.
