Secret NYPD documents reveal that its Demographics Unit engages in extensive unconstitutional racial and religious profiling in violation of the First and Fourth Amendments. The documents uncovered that the NYPD surveillled more than 250 mosques and Muslim student groups, and that undercover officers and informants were placed in at least 53 mosques, several without any suspicion of wrongdoing. The NYPD also identified 263 “hot spots” such as local shops and restaurants, on the basis of First Amendment protected religious and political speech that goes on there.
