NEW YORK – Today, Governor Cuomo gave his State of the State address outlining his policy agenda for New York.

In response to the Governor’s remarks, the NYCLU released the following statement from Executive Director, Donna Lieberman:

In what was truly a historic legislative session for New York last year, we made our reproductive health laws stronger, our voting system more democratic, our criminal legal system fairer, and immigrants safer.

“As we embark on a new decade, we welcome the Governor’s support for an inclusive Equal Rights Amendment in our state’s constitution, which would give constitutional protections to all New Yorkers against discrimination. We must build on the progress that we made last year and continue to construct an equitable democracy that works for all New Yorkers.

“Lawmakers must commit to ending solitary confinement, bolster protections for immigrants, require comprehensive sex education, ban the collection of biometric data, and give people who are dying the right to a peaceful death. New York has a unique opportunity to serve as the example of what a progressive democracy looks like and we look forward to working with the Governor to make New York a haven for justice, liberty, and dignity for all.”
