NEW YORK – After the first of three lawsuits challenging New York’s Green Light Law was dismissed last week, a select few county clerks have stated they will not comply with the law when it goes into effect in December.

The New York Civil Liberties Union released the following statement from Executive Director, Donna Lieberman:

“County clerks don’t determine who is eligible for licenses, the DMV does. Given certain clerks’ threatened refusal to issue licenses and obey the law, the DMV should move to ensure full implementation of the Green Light law statewide. The state has a duty to ensure lawful access to licenses for all New Yorkers, especially in counties where clerks have made plain their intention to unlawfully discriminate.”
