NEW YORK — The New York Civil Liberties Union today applauded Governor David Paterson for signing an executive order prohibiting discrimination against New York State employees on the basis of gender identity or gender expression. Now all state employees are legally protected against workplace discrimination.

“All New Yorkers deserve fair treatment and equality, and today’s executive order takes us a step closer to realizing that goal,” said NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman. “Employment decisions should be made based on qualifications such as skills and experience, not intolerance. Governor Paterson’s executive order sends a strong message that our state does not tolerate discrimination, and that all New Yorkers must be treated with dignity and respect.”
