North Jersey towns acquiring high-tech surveillance gear (northjersey.com)

Since 2005, local police departments in northern New Jersey have acquired nearly $1.4 million in high-tech surveillance equipment such as license plate readers and security cameras through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Buffer Zone Protection Program. The DHS program, which raises significant privacy concerns, identified 1,849 sites nationwide for surveillance and allows participating police departments decide what to monitor and what to share with federal agents.
