New York, Microsoft Unveil Joint Crime-Tracking System (bussinessweek.com)
The NYPD launched a broad new public surveillance program called the Domain Awareness System, which it developed in cooperation with Microsoft. The system, employed throughout lower and midtown Manhattan and set to be sold to other cities, collects and aggregates information from thousands of closed-circuit television cameras, license plate readers, radiation censors, and law enforcement databases, threatening the privacy of thousands of innocent New Yorkers and others traveling through the city.
