New Podcast: ACLU’s “At Liberty” to Launch With Episode Focusing on Family Separation

NEW YORK — The American Civil Liberties Union today launched a new podcast called “At Liberty.” Each week, this 30-minute show will take a deep dive into the pressing civil liberties or civil rights issues of the moment. One of the inaugural episodes will feature fresh takes from Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, who is the lead litigator on the ACLU’s family separation lawsuit and got the first injunction on Trump’s Muslim ban last year.

Hosted by former ACLU attorney and First Amendment expert Lee Rowland, “At Liberty” will explore diverse topics such as racial justice, reproductive rights, immigration rights, and voting rights. Every week, she will be joined by experts, both inside and outside the ACLU, scholars, grassroots leaders, and people fighting for their rights. Guests will share their stories and analysis to provide behind-the-scenes insight into the most consequential movements and strategies to expand civil rights and civil liberties in the Trump era.

“This podcast will allow us to explore the many current threats to our civil rights in an in-depth way, and figure out who’s fighting back and how,” said Rowland.

The first two episodes are now available. Episode #1 features former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards talking about the wins and losses of the reproductive rights movement over her 12 years at the organization. Episode #2 is the new discussion with Gelernt on pressing immigration issues, including the latest on family separation and Trump’s Muslim ban.
