Judge tosses lawsuit over FBI surveillance of California mosques (chicagotribune.com)
A US District Court dismissed on secrecy grounds all but one of the claims in a class action lawsuit brought by the ACLU and CAIR against the FBI for spying on Southern California Muslims in violation of their religious rights from 2006-2007. Despite significant public information regarding surveillance practices involving a key FBI informant, the court dismissed the case based on the government’s assertion of the state secrets privilege. In his opinion, the judge acknowledged that by accepting the government’s state secrets claim, it was sacrificing the constitutional rights of individuals in favor of national security. The ACLU will appeal the ruling.
