Intelligence Effort Named Citizens, Not Terrorists (Associated Press)

The Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations issued a report on fusion centers which concludes they have violated Americans’ civil liberties and are ineffective at producing or sharing information about potential terrorist threats. Fusion centers produced reports on First Amendment protected activities like a speaking event at a mosque and a group’s book recommendations. The subcommittee also concluded that the Department of Homeland Security violated its internal policies and the Privacy Act by indefinitely storing reports they deemed inappropriate for dissemination due to privacy or civil liberties concerns.
