House Subcommittee Hearing on Religious Freedom Misses the Mark

WASHINGTON – The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties today heard testimony from American Center for Law and Justice, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. Though today’s hearing was titled “The State of Religious Liberty,” the hearing focused nearly all questioning on the American Civil Liberties Union’s legal work on religion.
“While the bishops and others are attempting to take advantage of a political moment, the ACLU’s position on religious liberty remains one that we’ve always adhered to regardless of the political climate – religious liberty for all, not just some,” said Dena Sher, ACLU legislative counsel. “We will continue to vigorously defend the rights of all Americans to practice any faith or no faith at all.”
