The Justice Department used subpoenas to secretly obtain two months of telephone records relating to 20 personal and business phone lines that are used by over 100 Associated Press reporters and editors in New York, Washington and Hartford, Connecticut. The records include lists of incoming and outgoing calls, and the duration of each call. Despite the unprecedented scope of the records seizure, and the chilling effect that such a seizure may have on the freedom of the press, the DOJ has refused to disclose any details about the investigation to which it pertains.
