Feds Accused of Hiding Information From Judges About Covert Cellphone Tracking Tool (slate.com)

Documents obtained in response to an ACLU of Northern California Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request reveal that federal investigators withheld information from judges about their use of the cellphone spy device “Stingray” when applying for electronic surveillance orders. “Stingray” devices collect data on every cellphone in their vicinity, including from phones unrelated to an investigation, by tricking the phones into communicating with the devices like they were cell towers. A federal district court has also ruled that the FBI must release 25,000 records it withheld on “Stingray” devices in response to the Electronic Privacy Information Center’s separate FOIA request.
