Des Moines, IA. – Dane Schumann has been hired by the ACLU of Iowa as its new legislative director.

In that position, Schumann will oversee the ACLU of Iowa’s legislative agenda and spend time at the statehouse, working directly with legislators and policymakers.

Before coming to the ACLU, Schumann was a member of the House Republican Caucus staff in the Iowa Legislature. He analyzed bills and researched a wide range of subject matter on business and economic development issues. He also worked closely with legislators and staff on a bipartisan budget subcommittee and monitored agency rule-making and enforcement actions.

Prior to that, Schumann worked at a Des Moines lobbying firm that represented clients before the Iowa Legislature. Those clients ranged from Fortune 500 companies to local non-profits. He was responsible for developing strategic legislative planning for clients and analyzing the scope and impact of bills being considered.

ACLU of Iowa Executive Director Jeremy Rosen said, “We are delighted that Dane has joined our staff. His experience working both for and with the Iowa Legislature will be invaluable as the ACLU of Iowa works to build political power with the Iowa Legislature and with federal legislators from Iowa in order to advance our important and ambitious public policy agenda.”

A native of Hampton, Schumann received his bachelor’s degree with honors in political science at the University of Iowa. He received his law degree from Valparaiso University Law School. He is a member of the Iowa Bar Association.
