Cops to Congress: We need logs of Americans’ text messages (CNet.com)
Law enforcement organizations are lobbying Congress to require wireless providers to retain text message data in case they are useful to some future investigation. They proposed including the requirement as part of a major update to the Electronic Privacy Communications Act of 1986, a law designed to protect individuals’ privacy. If adopted, it would result in the preservation of innocent Americans’ communications for law enforcement purposes, raising significant 4th Amendment concerns by making communications providers a data repository for law enforcement.
