FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At a March 9 “”Newsmaker”” luncheon at the National Press Club, Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, will speak with journalists about the detentions at Guantánamo Bay and related government actions since 9/11 that go beyond the fight against terrorism and threaten the freedom of all Americans.

Immediately following the Newsmaker luncheon, which will be broadcast on C-SPAN and National Public Radio, the ACLU will hold a press briefing with families of the men imprisoned by the U.S. at Guantánamo Bay and U.S. veterans who share the ACLU’s concern that the government’s actions violate U.S. and international laws. More than 600 people, including some teenagers, from 44 countries are presently being held by the U.S. at Guantánamo – incommunicado, with only a few designated to stand trial before military tribunals. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on April 28 and rule by the end of term sometime in June.

The ACLU has also published a new report that details how a series of policy directives by the Bush Administration has created a “”parallel”” system of justice in America – a system that fails to provide the safeguards necessary to ensure due process: /conductunbecoming
