All policing, no protest around the inauguration (salon.com)
A recent report by the National Lawyers Guild finds that protestors’ First Amendment rights have been suppressed at public events like Presidential Inaugurations, and even private events like the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, by their designation as National Special Security Events (NSSE). The report concludes that the NSSE designation results in law enforcement exaggerating threats of violent protestors, implementing sophisticated media tactics, and excessive police presence, including the use of military-style weaponry and security equipment. It has been used increasingly at politically high profile or controversial events, chilling protestors’ rights.
