ACLU of Tennessee Honors Executive Director’s Twenty-Five Years of Service

NASHVILLE, TN – At its Saturday, November 21st Bill of Rights Celebration, the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee (ACLU-TN) will honor Hedy Weinberg for her twenty-five years as Executive Director.

“We are delighted to be recognizing Hedy for her twenty-five years of service. In those years, Hedy has been the voice, the face and the conscience of the organization. She has served it with honor, integrity, determination and distinction,” said attorney George Barrett, honorary chair of the event.

Since becoming executive director in 1984, Weinberg has administered and coordinated ACLU-TN’s advocacy, education, fundraising and legal programs. She also lobbies the Tennessee General Assembly on a range of civil liberties issues including privacy, freedom of speech, criminal justice, immigrant rights, reproductive freedom and religious freedom.

“Everyone in Tennessee owes a large debt of gratitude to Hedy for spearheading the efforts to ensure that the constitutional rights of all Tennesseans are protected,” said Barrett.

ACLU-TN is the only statewide organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the constitutional guarantees of the Bill of Rights. An affiliate of the national ACLU, ACLU-TN is a private, non-profit, non-partisan membership organization. Recent successes include defending equal access to educational information about LGBT issues for students; defeating a mean-spirited “English-Only” referendum which would have prohibited government employees from communicating with the public in any language but English; and battling legislative attempts to erode reproductive freedom.

Grammy-nominated songwriter and recording artist Beth Nielsen Chapman will perform at the event.

The Bill of Rights Celebration will begin at 6:30 pm with a silent auction of autographed books, art and more. Dinner, the award presentation and Nielsen Chapman’s musical performance will follow at 7:45 p.m. The Celebration will take place at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel at 2100 West End Avenue in Nashville.
