NEWARK, N.J. – Statement from Udi Ofer, ACLU-NJ Executive Director, in response to latest filing by Lambda Legal in Garden State Equality v. Dow:
“Last week’s Supreme Court decision was a tremendous victory, and with it New Jersey is now the epicenter of the next big battle for marriage equality. With DOMA being struck down, no one can argue that New Jersey’s civil union system is equal to marriage, as the thousands of couples in civil unions are ineligible for the hundreds of federal benefits that they would be entitled to if they were married. This separate and unequal system must end. The ACLU-NJ stands with Lambda Legal, Garden State Equality, and the seven plaintiff couples in the fight for marriage equality.”
