ACLU of Nevada to Serve as Election Protection Command Center

Las Vegas, NV – In accordance with the belief that equal access to the ballot box is critical for the functioning of our democracy, the ACLU of Nevada will utilize both its Las Vegas and Reno offices as Election Protection command centers for the general election on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.

On election day, trained volunteers will be dispatched to polling locations to work with poll workers to ensure that no eligible voters are turned away from the polls. Lawyers will be on hand in both Reno and Las Vegas to give specific legal advice as required or to work with local election officials to resolve the problem, similar to the structure from 2008 and 2012.

The ACLU of Nevada along with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights’ OUR VOTE Project (866-OUR-VOTE, http://www.866ourvote.org/) will be tracking current voter suppression efforts and preparing responsive strategies so that volunteers can help people exercise their right to vote. Historically, and again this year, the election officials in Clark County and Washoe County, as well as the Nevada Secretary of State’s office, have been very responsive to this non-partisan project.
