WASHINGTON –The American Civil Liberties Union has retained former federal prosecutor Michael Volkov. Volkov will assist the ACLU in its outreach to Republican members of Congress on its priority issues focusing on voting rights, criminal justice, national security and privacy.

“By hiring Michael, the ACLU further underscores its non-partisanship and its ability to work closely with leaders from both the Republican and Democratic parties,” said Laura W. Murphy, director of the Washington Legislative Office. “Michael will be an asset to our efforts to preserve Americans’ privacy, rebalance our criminal justice system and make our national security policies reflect the rule of law. With his varied and significant legal background, I’m looking forward to having his unique perspective as we continue our tireless advocacy to defend the civil liberties of every American. The Constitution is for the 100%, not for any one party or interest group”

With its Volkov partnership, the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office continues its long history of collaboration with conservative and libertarian champions. The office has worked closely with former congressman Bob Barr, Americans for Tax Reform’s Grover Norquist and David Keene, former head of the American Conservative Union.

“I am excited by the opportunity to join the ACLU and advance its work safeguarding Americans’ civil liberties,” said Volkov. “The ACLU has a distinguished history addressing issues of national importance by building bipartisan coalitions to protect our cherished liberties. I’ll be helping the ACLU ensure those liberties remain protected.”

Volkov has a prestigious legal career, spanning over two decades. Volkov has worked as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Washington D.C. office for 17 years and, as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, gained extensive experience working over 75 jury trials. Volkov has also gained legal experience serving as a trial attorney in the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division and as a deputy assistant attorney general in the department’s Office of Legislative Affairs. Volkov also served on both the Senate and House Judiciary Committees as their chief crime and terrorism counsel under Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. James Sensenbrenner’s leadership.

A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center (J.D.), the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School (B.S.), and the University of Pennsylvania (B.A.), Volkov is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia. Volkov will continue his work at the law firm of LeClairRyan during his ACLU consultation.
