ACLU Launches Vote By Mail Educational Tool

WASHINGTON — The American Civil Liberties Union today launched “Let People Vote,” a vote by mail educational tool to help voters protect their health and their civil liberties this election cycle. The tool, currently equipped with primary election information, will be refreshed in late August to educate voters ahead of the general election, and allows viewers to learn about their respective state’s access to vote by mail.

Let People Vote is part of ACLU’s larger effort to protect the ballot and democracy this election cycle with congressional and state advocacy campaigns and 15 lawsuits — in Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia — to ensure that every eligible voter can vote by mail, and to protect their rights when doing so.

The following is a statement from Bobby Hoffman, deputy director of the ACLU National Political Advocacy Department’s democracy division:

“With 103 days until the general election and mere days before the next slew of primaries, time is running out to ensure safe access to the ballot this election cycle. But politicians are refusing to adopt common sense measures — including expanded early voting periods and universal access to vote by mail — and instead playing politics with peoples’ lives in a dangerous game of voter suppression.

“We know that vote by mail will be the safest option for many voters this election cycle, but it can also be confusing. Rules vary from state to state and have been subject to rule changes due to COVID- 19. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for voters to cast their ballot by mail, because no one should have to choose between their health and their right to vote.”
