WASHINGTON — The American Civil Liberties Union today joined more than 70 organizations, including All* Above All Action Fund, EMILY’s List, Indivisible, MoveOn, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, UltraViolet, and Women’s March, to mobilize its over 3 million activists and hold a massive national day of action to “Stop the Bans.”

Tens of thousands of people are expected to participate in over 500 events across all 50 states, fighting back against anti-choice legislation in the states and uniting for reproductive freedom and justice. The ACLU has sued against recent state abortion bans in Ohio and Kentucky, and are preparing to challenge the bans in Georgia and Alabama.

Anthony D. Romero, ACLU executive Director, issued the following statement:

“Across the South and Midwest, these reckless and dangerous bans put politics before the health and wellbeing of patients as part of a nationally orchestrated strategy to overturn Roe v. Wade. But abortion is health care, and abortion is a right. It’s time to stop criminalizing health care, interfering with personal decisions, and substituting political agendas for the expertise of health care professionals. The ACLU and its members and supporters will not stand for these attacks. We have fought — and will continue to fight — these bans in the courts, and we are proud to join today with our partners and people around the country to fight these bans in the streets.”

This major nationwide mobilization comes on the heels of state legislatures passing bans on abortion in Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, and other states that criminalize abortion before many women even know they’re pregnant, threaten to prosecute or investigate women, and throw doctors in prison. Louisiana is also poised to pass a similar ban on abortion.

A flagship event will be held in Washington, D.C. outside the Supreme Court at noon with hundreds of people, including major reproductive justice, rights, and healthcare leaders as well as members of Congress.
