INDIANAPOLIS — The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana today announced the start of “First Tuesdays”, a monthly program of free public discussions about vital issues of the day.

The events will be held at the Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT) in downtown Indianapolis at noon on the first Tuesday of each month. The events are open to the public, who are encouraged to bring their lunches and listen while experts from various perspectives present their views and respond to audience questions. Sponsors of the events include NUVO, Indiana’s weekly alternative newspaper, and the repertory theater.

“The ‘First Tuesdays’ program is a response to the demand for respectful and intelligent discussion about issues that are important to our community,” saids Fran Quigley, Executive Director of the ACLU of Indiana. “The ACLU of Indiana is routinely engaged in the important social and political issues of our time, and we have found that there is a real hunger for reasoned discourse about these topics.”

The series’ first discussion, “Intelligent Design in Science Class” will be held from noon to 12:50 pm on February 7th at the IRT, 140 West Washington Street in Indianapolis. Presenters include William H. Ball, Jr., Director of the Center for Scientific Creation and Dr. David Stocum of the IUPUI School of Science.

Upcoming “First Tuesdays” programs include:

  • March 7 Spying on Americans: Where Do We Draw the Line?
  • April 4 Is a Voter Identification Law Necessary?
  • May 2 Should Same-Sex Marriage Be Legal?
  • June 6 Is Torture Ever Justified?
