ATLANTA — The ACLU of Georgia urges the Office of the Attorney General of Georgia to provide the Glynn County community with an update on the ongoing investigation surrounding their gross mishandling of the Ahmaud Arbery murder by District Attorneys Jackie Johnson and George E. Barnhill as well as the Glynn County Police Department. It has been 7 months since Gregory and Travis McMichael senselessly murdered Ahmaud Arbery. It took 73 days to arrest the men who hunted down and murdered Ahmaud.

On May 11, 2020, the Georgia Attorney General’s Office requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to look into potential prosecutorial misconduct by the Brunswick and the Waycross District Attorney’s Offices, as well as the Glynn County Police Department. In June, the ACLU of Georgia called on these district attorneys to resign, because their behavior makes them unfit for their offices.

“The ACLU of Georgia stands in solidarity with the Glynn County community in demanding an update on the GBI investigation into the actions of District Attorneys Johnson and Barnhill as well as the Glynn County Police Department,” said Christopher Bruce, political director of the ACLU of Georgia. “This delay in justice for Ahmaud is directly attributable to all of their clear disregard for their responsibilities to the community, their voters, and the laws of this land.”

“Leadership requires a greater level of responsibility and accountability. Whomsoever much is given, much is required. We are tired of the improper actions of our law enforcement officials that cause injustice and harm to the citizens they are sworn to protect. Therefore, we are calling for action from the governor’s office and the attorney general for the immediate removal of DAs Jackie Johnson and George Barnhill,” said Pastor Darren West, Living Word Worship Center International.
