ACLU of Georgia Statement on Trump Administration Decision to Keep DACA in Place

ATLANTA – The American Civil Liberties of Georgia today issued the following statement about the Trump administration’s decision to continue Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which allows immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, known as DREAMers, to apply for a work permit and temporary protection against deportation.

“The Trump administration’s decision is encouraging and a testament to everyone who has stood up and spoken out on behalf of DREAMers,” said Andrea Young, ACLU of Georgia executive director. “We will remain vigilant to hold the Trump administration accountable and defend the rights of all immigrants against draconian immigration policies that target them.”

The decision that immigrants enrolled in DACA will continue to be eligible and that “no work permits will be terminated prior to their current expiration dates” was announced on the Department of Homeland Security’s website. However, the Trump administration rescinded the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) program, but because DAPA was blocked by the courts, this action has a limited impact.

Earlier this week, a federal district court granted the ACLU’s request to block the Trump administration from revoking Jessica Colotl’s status under DACA and ordered her renewal application to be reconsidered by the Department of Homeland Security.
