ATLANTA – The ACLU of Georgia opposes additional barriers to voting. Rather than ensuring that the State make it easier and more efficient for Georgia voters to participate in our nation’s most treasured right of citizenship, a bill was introduced in the legislature to make it significantly harder to cast a ballot by absentee.

The Secretary of State and Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted an audit of absentee ballots. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that

“Law enforcement and election investigators didn’t find a single fraudulent absentee ballot during an audit of over 15,000 voter signatures, according to a report by the Georgia secretary of state’s office.”

“No fraudulent absentee ballots were identified during the audit,” the report said.

With the pandemic raging in our State, Georgia citizens used the absentee ballot to protect their health and the health of their families: 1.3 million in the general election alone.

“This was the most scrutinized election in Georgia history. Two recounts and an audit that included the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” said Andrea Young, executive director of the ACLU of Georgia. “This bill limits ballot access for everyone without an electronic scanner/printer at home. This is wrong.”
