ATLANTA – The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia today condemned President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children, known as Dreamers, to apply for a work permit and temporary protection against deportation.

Andrea Young, the executive director of the ACLU of Georgia, had this reaction:

“President Trump has broken a promise to these young people and to our country. This reprehensible betrayal demonstrates once again that Trump’s cruelty is matched only by his blatant disregard for the rule of law.

“We are sickened by this heartless attack on young people whose hard work and generosity have benefited our communities in so many ways, but we are not giving up. Now it’s up to Congress to do the right thing and pass bipartisan legislation – supported by majorities on both sides of the aisle – that will protect Dreamers from being targeted by Trump’s draconian immigration policies.

“The ACLU of Georgia will continue to stand with our client Jessica Colotl and all Dreamers who have earned the right to live and work in the country where they grew up and continue to call home.”

The ACLU of Georgia has been active in the fight to protect Georgia’s 24,135 DACA recipients, including going to court on behalf of Georgia Dreamer Jessica Colotl whose status was arbitrarily terminated by the Trump administration earlier this year.

In June, a federal district court temporarily blocked the Trump administration from revoking Colotl’s status under DACA and ordered her renewal application to be re-evaluated under the same consistent standards used to grant her previous approvals.
