“Creating The Future” Is Theme Of 2009 Event FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASECONTACT: (202) 675-2312; media@dcaclu.org WASHINGTON – ACLU privacy experts are featured speakers this week at the 2009 Computers, Freedom and Privacy (CFP) conference, the nation’s premier conference focused on the consequences of technology for freedom. The three-day event, which takes place from Tuesday, June 2 to Thursday, June 4 at the George Washington University Marvin Center in Washington, D.C., also features the founder and CEO of Craigslist.com, Obama administration and former Bush administration officials, academics, activists and journalists. “We are living through a period of perpetual technological revolution” said Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office, who spoke on the conference’s opening panel. “As our technology continues to evolve rapidly, it is important that advocates, government, academics, and technologists meet to think about and debate its implications for our freedom.” In addition to Fredrickson, ACLU panelists and moderators include conference co-chair Jay Stanley of the ACLU Technology and Liberty Program; Tania Simoncelli, ACLU Science Advisor; Mike German, ACLU Policy Counsel and former FBI Special Agent; Chris Calabrese, ACLU Technology and Liberty Program Counsel; Nicki Ozer, Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Director of the ACLU of Northern California; Catherine Crump, ACLU Attorney; and Barry Steinhardt, former Director of the ACLU Technology and Liberty Program. “’Creating the Future’ is not only the conference theme, but also its mission,” said Stanley. “For 19 years, CFP has been the place where cutting-edge thinkers have gathered to figure out how to navigate the new technology landscape with our freedoms intact.” Among the highlights of the conference are sessions on “The Obama Administration and Freedom”; “Clouding Computing, Privacy and Free Speech”; “The Digital Fourth Amendment; “The Politics and Technology of DNA Databases”; “Internet Censorship and Filtering”; and “Internet and Activism: 20 years after Tienanmen.” More detailed information is available online at www.cfp2009.org. # # #
