ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero Joins Activists And Celebrities At Rally For Women’s Health

WASHINGTON – The executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, Anthony D. Romero, will join members of Congress, civil rights leaders and celebrities today in addressing the Stand Up for Women’s Health rally at the U.S. Capitol. Romero will also be honored this evening with Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s Margaret Sanger Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the reproductive health and rights movement.

The ACLU is one of more than 20 organizations participating in the rally, which is organized by Planned Parenthood Federation of America and NARAL Pro-Choice America to oppose the broad assault on women’s health that is being waged by Congress. Currently, there are bills in Congress that would defund family planning programs, attempt to eliminate insurance coverage for abortion and create a loophole in federal law to allow hospitals to refuse to provide women life-saving abortions.

“Today is the day that we serve notice to the House, the Senate and the President of the United States that we will not tolerate these kinds of government intrusions into a woman’s most personal medical decisions,” said Romero. “Today is the day we send a message to our pro-choice champions on Capitol Hill and in the White House to stand firm and fight back.”

The rally will feature speakers from the participating organizations, as well as actors Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, Connie Britton and David Eigenberg and a Planned Parenthood patient and cancer survivor who will speak about her experience.

“These laws endanger the lives of women and their families,” said Romero. “We cannot compromise on women’s health.”
