NEW YORK– Representative Mike Pence (R-IN) today introduced a bill in the House of Representatives that would deny any federal family planning funds to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, or any other organization that provides abortion care. The American Civil Liberties Union condemned penalizing these organizations for providing legal, vital health services.

The following can be attributed to Laura W. Murphy, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office:

“Rep. Pence’s bill would undermine women’s access to basic health care services. Family-planning organizations like Planned Parenthood Federation of America provide critical services and health care, especially to men and women in low-income areas and communities of color. This proposed law seeks to do nothing more than prevent the exercise of a woman’s legally protected right to an abortion. We hope that Congress will stand up for women’s health by defeating this unconstitutional bill.”
