JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – In response to Missouri Attorney General Andrew Baily’s proposed emergency rule restricting access to gender-affirming care, the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Missouri issued the following statement:

“Attorney General Bailey’s latest action is dangerous, reckless, and outside the Attorney General’s authority. Instead of leaving personal medical decisions to families and their doctors, politicians in Jefferson City are interfering with and delaying evidence-based health care while ignoring the dangers to transgender individuals.

“While General Bailey claims to be concerned for the welfare of transgender individuals in Missouri, his actions pose a threat to the trans community while ignoring the actual dangers that trans people face from poverty, abuse, and violence. Sadly, rather than addressing the real needs of constituents, Missouri’s General Assembly and Attorney General are using their governmental powers to try and deny trans youth the support and care they need. These actions do not protect our children or anyone else; rather, they put an already marginalized group in greater danger.”
