ACLU Comment on Temporary Stay in Remain in Mexico Challenge

NEW YORK — A federal appeals court has granted the government’s request for a temporary stay of a ruling it issued earlier today. The earlier ruling had suspended the Trump administration’s policy that forced asylum seekers to return to Mexico and remain there indefinitely while their asylum applications were processed in the United States.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Center for Gender & Refugee Studies, and Southern Poverty Law Center are challenging the policy.

Judy Rabinovitz, special counsel in the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, had the following reaction to tonight’s court action granting the stay:

“This is a temporary step and does not change the fact that courts have ruled multiple times against this illegal policy. We will continue working to permanently end this unspeakably cruel policy.”
