ACLU Comment on Passage of the Electoral Count Act

WASHINGTON — Today the Senate passed the Consolidated Appropriation Act of 2023 to fund the federal government. The package includes legislation to reform and modernize the Electoral Count Act, a federal law outlining procedures for counting electoral votes following a presidential election.

“The ACLU commends the leadership of Senators Susan Collins and Joe Manchin in bringing together a bipartisan group of senators to draft and build support for the Electoral Count Reform Act, and thanks the Senators from both political parties for their commitment to protecting our democracy and supporting this legislation. We look forward to the House of Representatives passing this bill quickly.

“Every American should be confident that the outcome of their state’s presidential elections will be honored. It is imperative Americans have confidence in our democratic process, especially after the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6.”
