ACLU Comment on House Introduction of Bill to Protect Dreamers, TPS, and DED Recipients

WASHINGTON — The House introduced “the Dream and Promise Act” today to protect Dreamers and eligible recipients of Temporary Protected Status and Deferred Enforced Departure by providing them and other immigrants with a pathway to citizenship.

Lorella Praeli, American Civil Liberties Union deputy political director, said:

“This bill will protect people whose lives were thrown into chaos by the Trump administration when it ended programs that have protected these individuals for years. Thanks to undocumented activists and impacted community members whose futures are on the line, the House has introduced a bold and progressive bill that would protect the lives of over two million people.

“The ACLU urges members to re-examine the provisions in the bill that unnecessarily limit protections for certain individuals and that create overbroad exceptions to privacy.

“The House must pass this bill, and put into action their long-held support for Dreamers and immigrants. It’s time for members to vote their principles and promises.”
