ACLU Comment on First Anniversary of the Death of Congressman John Lewis

WASHINGTON — Today marks a year since the death of U.S. Congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis on July 17, 2020.

Molly McGrath, ACLU senior campaign strategist, said:

“Today marks one year since the death of civil rights hero Congressman John Lewis. This past year we’ve seen innumerable attacks on the right to vote—more than 400 anti-voter bills have been introduced in 48 states. These bills erect unnecessary barriers for people to register to vote, vote by mail, or vote in person.

“As we reflect on the life of Congressman Lewis, Congress and President Biden must urgently act and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect the right to vote and make the promise of democracy real for all of us. There is no time for delay.”
