WASHINGTON — The Biden administration said it was suspending new enrollments in the forced return to Mexico program also known as Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), effective today.

The American Civil Liberties Union and partners challenged the Trump administration policy when it was first implemented.

Judy Rabinovitz, ACLU attorney and lead counsel in the challenge, had the following reaction to this latest development:

“This is a very welcome first step. The Biden administration needs to keep going to end this illegal policy and remedy the intolerable situation of people currently in the program. That means allowing them to pursue their cases in the United States, in safety and without further trauma, detention, delay, or coercion.”
