The ACLU of Colorado, the state’s premier civil rights organization, has hired Jessie Ulibarrí to direct its new public policy department. For over 50 years, the ACLU of Colorado has defended the civil rights and civil liberties of all Coloradans, through litigation, legislation and public education. With the creation of a full public policy department, the ACLU’s capacity for legislative and advocacy work will increase dramatically.

Jessie Ulibarrí has worked in politics for nearly a decade, organizing campaigns and advancing policies that strengthen Colorado’s under-served communities. Most recently, as State Director for Mi Familia Vota, he helped launch the largest collaborative campaign in Colorado’s history to encourage Latinos to vote. In previous roles he was one of the architects of the 2008 defeat of Amendment 46, the anti-equal opportunity ballot initiative, making Colorado the first state to reject such an initiative at the ballot.

“We are very excited to be able to hire someone with Jessie’s expertise and experience to build our new public policy department,” said ACLU Executive Director Ray Drew. “His track record of success shows his dedication to civil rights and social justice as well as a dynamic ability to get results. We look forward to having Jessie lead our efforts to defend freedom at the Capitol and in city and county chambers throughout the state.”

In a volunteer capacity, Jessie is the Chair of the Human Rights and Community Relations Advisory Board for the City of Denver, and is a member of the Denver GLBT Commission. He serves on the Board of Directors for Colorado Progressive Coalition, the Board of Directors for Colorado Jobs with Justice, and the Alumni Board for the Center for Progressive Leadership. A graduate of the University of Colorado, Jessie is a proud father and resides with his family in his hometown of Thornton.
