ACLU: All Nebraskans Should Celebrate Today’s Historic Victory

LINCOLN, NE – Today the United States Supreme Court determined that denying same-sex couples the opportunity to marry is unconstitutional. The ACLU was co-counsel in two of the four Freedom to Marry cases that were heard before the Supreme Court.

Our hearts are soaring as we celebrate the news of this incredible victory for all Nebraskans and all Americans. Love wins! Fairness wins! Equality wins! The Nebraska ACLU has won two historic decisions challenging the discrimination that has been enshrined in our state constitution and finally today our clients and countless Nebraska families can finally rest assured that their love, commitment, and family have security and protection under the law.

While we celebrate this momentous decision, we recognize the work that still needs to be done in Nebraska. The ACLU will not stop working until the rights of all Nebraskans are respected by all Nebraskans. We renew our efforts alongside faith leaders, the business community and policymakers to ensure no one is fired because of who they are or who they love. We will continue our work with students who are denied the opportunity to fully participate in their schools because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We will remain vigilant to ensure that all county clerks and government agencies comply with this decision with all deliberate speed. Today is a day to celebrate, to unify, and to move forward into a Nebraska that is more fair and more just- that indeed benefits all Nebraskans.
