Wearing Orange and Proud

It’s been six years to the day that the first detainee arrived at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba Naval Base.

Indefinite detention without due process is illegal under our Constitution, antithetical to the American way, and would have made our founding fathers gasp in horror. So I am wearing orange.

I’m wearing orange to remind America that detainees are still being held at Guantanamo Bay and that it’s not okay with me. This morning I got up at 5:00 a.m. to be in the audience of the Today Show, to wear orange peacefully and to convey my message: “Close Guantanamo.” Unfortunately my friends and I didn’t get on the show – we were informed that anyone wearing orange was not permitted in the audience (ironically even those folks who had no political message, just the bad fortune of wearing orange today were excluded) – but we weren’t discouraged. We care too much. We are too much harmed by the existence of Guantanamo Bay. So we passed out flyers and orange ribbons in the pouring rain to Americans. We said to people: “Good morning. Today is the sixth year anniversary of Guantanamo Bay.” No more explanation was required. The American public knows. Now it’s time for the American public to do something about it.
