Janice Barrier and Sherie Schild of St. Louis have both been diagnosed with cancer and have already experienced extreme hardship due to the state’s failure to recognize their marriage. They have been together for over 30 years, and were married in Iowa in 2009. They’ve faced sky high medical bills and worry about what would happen if their cancers reoccur or if one of them needs care in a nursing home and they’re denied the right to care for each other in privacy because the state views them as legal strangers.
